The words to read
GROW is a conversation structure, four stages in order, and you can run it on yourself.
G, Goal. What do you actually want out of this? R, Reality. What is true right now, honestly, including what you have already tried? O, Options. Everything you could do, listed before you judge any of it. W, Will. What are you going to do, and by when?
It came out of coaching practice in Britain in the 1980s. Sir John Whitmore is the name most attached to it, working alongside Graham Alexander and Alan Fine. Whitmore wrote it up in Coaching for Performance, still one of the most widely used coaching books there is.
The reason it works is the order. Most of us go straight from a problem to an option, usually the first one that occurs to us. GROW makes you sit in Reality before you are allowed to generate anything, and makes you generate more than one before you pick.
Use it when a goal has stopped moving and you cannot say why. Twenty minutes with GROW will usually tell you whether you are stuck on the goal, the facts, your options, or your willingness.
There is no schedule for this one. Come back whenever something feels jammed.
